Two more North Carolina National Guard units have been placed on alert for deployment in Operation Desert Shield and one unit previously put on alert was mobilized, officials said Friday.

The 691st Maintenance Company, located in Fremont and Farmville, and the 731st Maintenance Company in Reidsville and Butner were put on alert, said N.C. National Guard Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Robb Jr.The Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 690th Maintenance Battalion, located in Kinston, was ordered to active duty effective today.

The moves bring to nine the number of N.C. National Guard units put on active duty. The 731st and the 691st are the only units on alert.
