A mother, her daughter and an elderly man were killed this week when their car ran a stop sign and was struck by a truck, a state trooper said.
Highway Patrol Sgt. Willard Mitchell said the car was driven by Shirley Christian Hawkins, 54, of Route 2, Lumberton. She and her mother, Lucy Blackmon Laster, 75, of Route 6, Lumberton, and Roosevelt Campbell, 72, of Route 2, Lumberton, died.The truck driver, Lawrence Everett Peele, 69, of Route 2, Laurinburg, was shaken but was not hurt, Mitchell said. Peele was driving an empty flatbed truck for Covington Redi-Mix of Laurinburg.
