Smith’s Silas Mason scores two of his game-high 22 points on a dunk in Friday’s win over Mount Tabor.

GREENSBORO — Silas Mason scored a game-high 22 points to lift the Smith boys basketball team to a 66-53 victory over Mount Tabor tonight.

Mason had 15 first-half points in front of the home crowd as the Golden Eagles picked up a solid third win in the Piedmont Triad 3-A Conference.

Smith moved to 10-6 overall under Coach Derrick Partee and 3-2 in conference play. Khalid Hinds added 13 points for the Golden Eagles, and Jordan Williams chipped in 10 points.

Mason, a 6-7 junior wingman, had a monster dunk with just more than minutes to play to extend the lead to double digits, and then he helped seal the victory with free throws down the stretch.

Smith had lost four in a row before picking up a win over North Forsyth on Tuesday night.

“I expect to see a lot of more of that (on Mason’s play) in what we saw tonight,” Partee said. “He’s really been working on his game, and he’s proven that every day.”

Smith held Mount Tabor to 17 points in the second half, which did not surprise Partee.

“We’re a defensive team,” Partee said. “Defense is kind of what we hang our hat on.”

Smith has given up 60 or more points only twice this season.

Mount Tabor fell to 11-4 overall, having lost 62-50 loss to R.J. Reynolds on Tuesday night. Dillon Bullard led Mount Tabor with 15 points, but the Spartans fell ice cold in the second half. This was their first conference loss of the season, pushing them a game behind undefeated Southwest Guilford for first place the Piedmont Triad 3-A.

“Our conference is really tough,” Partee said. “We’ve had a chance to win basically every game we’ve played.”

The Golden Eagles capitalized on Spartans turnovers in a 24-point first quarter. The game hung in the balance as Smith only led by three at the half. But, the Golden Eagles defense made the difference in the end.

“We just make people take tough shots,” Mason said.
