After cutting off a fellow soldier's head, a U.S. Army sergeant on trial for murder remarked to no one in particular: ``That's what happens when you commit adultery,' a witness testified Tuesday.
Sgt. Stephen Schap, 26, of Baltimore is charged with premeditated murder in the beheading of Spec. Gregory Glover, 21, of Phoenix. Glover was stabbed 10 to 15 times before he was decapitated.Schap was arrested after taking the victim's head to his pregnant wife's hospital room in a gym bag.
Defense lawyers do not deny Schap killed Glover but say he exploded in sudden rage because he believed his wife was carrying Glover's child. They say Schap did not learn until the day of the killing that his wife was pregnant.
If convicted of premeditated murder, Schap would face automatic life imprisonment.
