MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Sean Smith pitched eight innings, the longest outing by a Greensboro pitcher this season, and the Hornets scored a 5-1 victory over Myrtle Beach in South Atlantic League baseball Saturday.
Smith allowed three hits - all doubles - and walked two in picking up his second victory without a loss.The Hurricanes' only real damage against Smith came in the third inning when Alex Gonzalez' double scored Mike Morland, who had doubled two outs earlier.
That tied the game. Greensboro took the lead for good in the fourth when Tom Wilson scored on Tim Cooper's sacrifice fly.
Andy Croghan pitched the ninth in relief of Smith, who retired 16 of the last 18 Myrtle Beach hitters he faced.
The Hurricanes' three pitchers struck out 12 Greensboro batters. Greensboro improved to 6-4. Myrtle Beach dropped to 1-9. The same two teams play this evening at 5:30.
