The new 4x4 ambulance will have the capability of traveling and transporting patients safely in snowy and icy conditions.

WENTWORTH — Rockingham County EMS recently added its first-ever stout 4x4 ambulance to its fleet that will be able to handle rough weather and terrain better than most emergency vehicles.

A 2019 Ford F550, the ambulance was purchased from Northwestern Emergency Vehicles in Jefferson, North Carolina, after Rockingham County Commissioners and Lance Metzler, county manager, approved the purchase in the annual budget.

The ambulance is expected to help safely transport patients and assist in emergency settings during snowy and icy weather. The need for the vehicle was made apparent after a 2018 storm dumped 18 inches of snow on the county, making EMS responders’ job hazardous and difficult.
