REIDSVILLE — The assistant principal of Reidsville High School was arrested and charged with driving while impaired at 9:20 a.m. on Thursday, May 18.
Matthew Shawn Rice, 42, of 1526 Stoney Creek Church Road, Burlington, was arrested at 1034 North Scales St. and Lee Circle, according to a Reidsville Police Department arrest report. The officer transported him to Annie Penn Hospital.
That same day, Reidsville High School Principal Ann Mitchell sent out a phone notification to families.
“I wanted you to know that Assistant Principal Matt Rice was arrested today with a DWI and reckless driving caused by doctor-prescribed medication,” Mitchell said in the alert.
“Mr. Rice did give us permission to share this information with you as we wanted to be as transparent as possible,” she continued. “We apologize we are not legally able to give specific information; however, we take all charges very seriously and the safety of your child is our number one priority.”
According to the alert, Rice is suspended pending further investigation.
RPD reports that Rice was given a custody release and a court date for Aug. 1 in Wentworth District Court.
