The results of election recounts in all 100 counties give Supreme Court Justice John Webb 1,897 more votes than Republican challenger I. Beverly Lake Jr., state Elections Director Alex Brock said Thursday.
But Webb, a Democrat, can't be certified as the winner of the Supreme Court seat until legal challenges by Lake have been exhausted, Brock said.Lake has challenged results in Durham and Guilford counties, saying judges there improperly held some polls open longer than others.
The numbers reported to the Board of Elections gave Webb 927,981 votes and Lake 926,084.
Lake said he plans to request at hearings scheduled in Durham next week and in Greensboro the following week that all votes cast after the polling deadline be thrown out. If that request is denied, he said he plans to ask for a new election.
