Police and troops Sunday cleared sections of a strategic jungle road blocked for more than two weeks by protesters supporting the former Contra rebels.

Town mayors in eastern and southeastern Nicaragua, backed by former Contra rebels, launched the protest movement Nov. 1 to demand that President Violeta Chamorro's administration break all ties with the leftist Sandinistas.The protesters want the government to fulfill promises of land and aid made to the former rebels. They also want members of the Sandinista opposition removed from key military and police posts.
