HIGH POINT Mr. Thomas (Tom) Asia (T.A.) Payne, Jr., 83, affectionately known as "Poppy" and "Gramps," passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 28, 2018, at the Hospice Home at High Point. He was born on July 28, 1934, in Davidson County, NC to Thomas Asia Payne and Annie Shields Payne. He was a 1952 graduate of Hasty High School, where he received a basketball scholarship to High Point College. He graduated from High Point College in 1957 with a degree in history and was a four-year letterman on the basketball team. He received his master's degree in education administration from UNC-G and his ed-specialist degree from Appalachian State University. He retired from the Guilford County School System after serving as an assistant principal at Ragsdale High School, Southeast Guilford High School, and Southern Guilford High School. He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and the 60 Plus Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald Payne, Sr. and Richard Payne; his sister, Lucille Fitzgerald; and a nephew, Donald Payne, Jr. On April 21, 1957, he married Elizabeth Ann (Betsy) Chambers, who survives of the home; also surviving are his sons, Scott Payne and wife Sheri of High Point and Jay Payne and wife Stephanie of Thomasville; his sister, Jacqueline (Jackie) Shackelford and husband Charles of High Point; grandchildren, Avery Payne, Sheldon Payne, and Silas Payne; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved cats, Barney and Pepper. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 1, 2018, at 2 p.m. at Zion United Church of Christ with Rev. Gary Phaup and Rev. Rickey Payne officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Payne will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will be at the funeral home on Saturday from 5 until 7 p.m. The family requests memorials may be directed to Zion UCC, 130 Hasty School Rd.
