MARCH 24, 1928 - MARCH 9, 2020 Irene Therese Roche Dunne passed away peacefully with family by her side on March 9, 2020, just 34 days after the passing of her beloved husband James Clement Dunne, proving that true love knows no bounds. Irene wanted to be with Jim. Born in New York City to a close knit family, Irene was the youngest of four children, the "baby" of the family beloved and happily spoiled by her siblings. Irene had a gorgeous operatic voice, and attended the Juilliard School under the sponsorship of a devoted patron. She also could play the piano beautifully by ear, and delighted friends and family with sing-alongs throughout her life. She met her husband Jim at a Fordham University party, which she had attended with a date of her own, but chose to stay at the party when the date wished to leave. He asked "Who will take you home?" Irene pointed to Jim and said "He will." Irene was a constant presence and inspiration for Jim, encouraging him to go to the best law school and paying for his Harvard Law School application. She worked at Prince Matchabelli and at the Jockey Club in New York City, where she helped to design racing silks for the riders. Irene and Jim married in 1952, and daughter Susan was born in 1961, with Leslie and Carol following soon after. Irene and Jim raised "the girls" in Darien, Connecticut, where Irene served as the president of the Darien Arts Council, volunteered endless hours for the Tokeneke Club swim team program, and worked at the Darien News-Review. She was known among her close circle of friends as "The Chairman of the Board" because of her quick wit and wonderfully sharp sense of humor. And she was beloved for answering the call to "Sing Danny Boy, Irene" as friends and family would listen to her voice late into the night. Irene and Jim retired to Cape Cod, Massachusetts in 1988 and enjoyed an extraordinarily long and healthy retirement, traveling the world and making new friends wherever they went. Irene leaves behind daughters Susan Dunne, New York, NY; Leslie Dunne Ketner (Robert), Greensboro, NC; Carol Dunne Hackett (Peter), Etna, NH; and her grandchildren, James Hackett and Eleanor Hackett, also of Etna.
