MCCANDLESSMr. Richard Herndon McCandless, 86, formerly of Little Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Lakeview Memorial Park with the Rev. Mark Norman Vickers officiating.
Richard was born on Feb. 21, 1918, in Wythe County, Va., to the late Robert Lawrence and Florence Catron McCandless. He served in the United States Army from 1942-1945. Richard was employed for 36 years with Cone Mills Print Works Division. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Sizemore and Pauline Sands and three brothers, Lloyd, Ray and Howard McCandless.
He is survived by his former wife, Mattie Elizabeth McCandless of Greensboro; three daughters, Wanda Kaye Mills and husband Billy of Pleasant Garden, Debra Sue Belton and husband Harold of Brown Summit and Teresa Lynn Kutchey and husband Tom of Newaygo, Mich.; and one son, Richard Wayne McCandless of Greensboro; three sisters, Nelda May of Whitsett, Dorothy Griffin of Cherokee and Ruby Manring of High Point and one brother, Harold McCandless of High Point; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in the Forbis & Dick North Elm Street Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the charity of the donors choice.
The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of Britthaven of Madison for the loving care given to Mr. McCandless.
