HIGH POINT — Two people died Saturday morning when an SUV crossed into oncoming traffic on West Wendover Avenue, striking four vehicles.

Chad McDonnell, 44, of Union County was pronounced dead at the scene, police said in a news release.

Marzelle Henderson, 73, of High Point died on the way to the hospital.

Several witnesses started calling 911 at 9:10 a.m. Saturday to report a white SUV, driven by McDonnell, heading west in the eastbound lanes of Wendover. The SUV hit four vehicles, including Henderson’s, according to the police.

Two other drivers were injured in the wreck at the intersection of Wendover and Penny Road, police Capt. Anthro Gamble said. A driver and passenger in one vehicle were unhurt.

Three SUVs and two cars were involved in the accident, which closed Wendover Avenue at the site of the wreck for more than five hours.

Gamble said speed was a factor in the accident.

A Highway Patrol helicopter was called to take aerial photographs of the scene “to gain further evidence of the wreck,” Gamble said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the High Point Police Department at (336) 887-7969.
