ASHEBORO — A 19-year-old Pleasant Garden man pleaded guilty to felony death by motor vehicle in Randolph County Superior Court Tuesday.

On Feb. 12, 2018, Evan Lee Deforge, who was 17 at the time, was driving on Bumpass Road south of Liberty around 2:20 a.m. when the vehicle traveled off the road and overturned.

A passenger in the vehicle, Colby Haithcock, 16, of Franklinville, died at the scene. Both Haithcock and Deforge were students at Providence Grove High School.

An investigation revealed that the teens had attended a party earlier on in the night where alcohol was present. Alcohol was cited as a contributing factor to the crash.

Deforge was charged with driving while impaired, careless and reckless driving, possession of a malt beverage by a person less than 19 and felony death by motor vehicle.

Tuesday, during a plea hearing led by Assistant District Attorney Ray Warburton, Deforge pleaded guilty to felony death by motor vehicle and misdemeanor reckless driving.

After a lengthy sentencing hearing, Deforge received an active prison sentence of 51 to 74 months in the N.C. Department of Adult Corrections.
