WHITEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — An 18-year-old North Carolina man has been charged with murder and attempted murder after a shooting at a gas station last week, authorities said.

Jadakiss Jahein Watkins of Riegelwood also was charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle, the Columbus County Sheriff's Office said in a news release on Wednesday. Watkins is being held in the county jail and online records don't indicate whether he has an attorney.

The sheriff's office said deputies were called to Sam’s Pit Stop on Feb. 6., and when they arrived, they found the shooting had occurred in the parking lot and involved several people.

According to the sheriff's office, Dwon Demontre Maultsby, 28, of Chadbourn, was taken to Columbus Regional Healthcare Systems and pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Watkins also was shot and was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

The sheriff's office says an investigation into the shooting is continuing.
