GREENSBORO — It’s still unclear if Greensboro’s third homicide in about nine days was an act of self defense.

Nathaniel Brown, 27, of Greensboro died in a shooting about 9:45 p.m., Wednesday at Westview Valley Apartments, 426 Guilford College Road.

Brown and another man got into a fight shortly before the shooting. At one point, one of the men pulled a handgun and the two struggled over it, according to police Capt. Mike Richey.

Each man got shot once during the struggle, Richey said.

Brown died at the scene.

Paramedics took the other man to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

Police are interviewing witnesses to the shooting, Richey said.

"We're still trying to find out who may have been the aggressor or if this may have been a case of self-defense," he said.

Fifty-seven-year-old Cathy Ann Littles, of 3209 Orange St., Apt. B, died at a hospital after being stabbed at her Summit Station Apartments home on July 4, police said.

James David Footman, 43, of 1710 Boone St., in Greensboro is accused of first-degree murder in her death. Police arrested him on July 7. He also faces a charge of attempted first-degree murder. During the assault on Littles, he also stabbed another woman who survived, police said.

About 12:30 p.m., Saturday, police responded to reports of a shooting at Berryman and Flint streets. When they arrived, they found 29-year-old Christopher Stephen Onley of Greensboro suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

He was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said.

Police have not identified any suspects in the shooting.

“We continue to work those three,” Richey said, “get them closed. The question on this one (Brown) is if it is a homicide or self defense.”
