GREENSBORO — The VF Foundation announced a $1.5 million gift Thursday to Action Greensboro to support the continued development of the Downtown Greenway.
VF Foundation, the private foundation funded by VF Corp., made the announcement at a meeting of Greensboro-based VF employees at the Koury Convention Center, according to a news release.
“When the idea for the Greenway was introduced nearly 20 years ago, it represented a bold vision to positively transform this city with a unique outdoor and activity-based cultural treasure,” said Steve Rendle, chairman, president and CEO of VF, in the news release. “We’re excited to see it near completion so the Greensboro community — including our employees and their families — can enjoy it for many years to come.”
VF donated $250,000 to help launch the Downtown Greenway’s first round of fundraising and has provided T-shirts for the annual Run 4 the Greenway fundraiser for eight years, the release said.
“VF Corporation, Action Greensboro and the City of Greensboro share a strong value that outdoors matter,” said Susan S. Schwartz, executive director of The Cemala Foundation, chairwoman of the Action Greensboro Operating Group, and chairwoman of the Downtown Greenway fundraising committee, in the release. “This legacy gift will help ensure that Greensboro residents continue to have an exceptional quality of life.”
The $36 million greenway project, financed with public and private money, is expected to be completed in 2020.
