GREENSBORO — Police have identified a Greensboro man who collapsed in police custody early Saturday morning and then later died at a hospital.
Marcus Deon Smith, 38, died around 1:50 a.m. on Saturday after being taken to the hospital by EMS, according to a police news release.
Officers had earlier found Smith around 12:45 a.m. in the 100 block of North Church Street allegedly running in and out of traffic. Police described him in the release as being suicidal and disoriented.
Police worked with Smith to give him help until EMS arrived at 12:50 a.m.
While officers were attempting to transport Smith for mental evaluation, he became combative and collapsed. Both EMS and officers began rendering aid. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
This incident is currently under investigation by the Greensboro Police Department and the State Bureau of Investigation.
The patrol officers involved have been placed on administrative duty, as according to policy of the Greensboro Police Department. They are officers L.A. Andrews, R.R. Duncan, A.G. Lewis, and J.C. Payne.
