WENTWORTH — A Rockingham County grand jury indicted Jose Silvano Alvarez Jr. Tuesday in the shooting deaths of Douglas “Troy” and LaDonna Moseley French.
A grand jury, which met about 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Rockingham County Courthouse, returned two indictments on charges of first-degree murder, according to Rockingham County District Attorney Craig Blitzer.
Deputies charged Alvarez, a 28-year-old Greensboro resident, in the shooting deaths of the prominent Reidsville couple more than three years after the Feb. 4, 2012, double homicide.
Alvarez is the brother-in-law of Whitley French Alvarez, the couple’s 22-year-old daughter and the only survivor of the shootings.
Whitley French Alvarez told deputies in 2012 that her parents ran toward her room to help after she screamed when she woke up to a man on top of her.
The suspect shot the husband and wife multiple times. Whitley French Alvarez, who was 19 at the time, sustained a minor cut, according to reports.
She was dating John Alvarez, Jose’s brother, at the time of the shootings. They married in May this year.
Blitzer and the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office won’t provide information as to what led them to arrest Jose Alvarez Jr. in the killings.
Attorney Vincent Rabil was appointed as Alvarez Jr.’s capital defender.
Blitzer has not yet said publicly if he will seek the death penalty in the case.
A new court date has not been scheduled.
