A capital defender is now representing the Greensboro man accused of fatally shooting a prominent Reidsville couple in 2012.
Jose Silvano Alvarez Jr., 28, of 2811 Cottage Drive, Apt. A, in Greensboro faces two counts of first-degree murder in the Feb. 4, 2012 deaths of Douglas “Troy” and LaDonna Moseley French.
Deputies arrested Alvarez on Aug. 25. He is being held in the Rockingham County Jail without bail.
On Aug. 26, Rockingham County District Court Judge Tony Grogan appointed Eden-based attorney Seth Woodall to represent Alvarez, but court records showed Tuesday he is now being represented by Winston-Salem based assistant capital defender Vincent Rabil.
Neither attorney immediately returned a request for comment.
Grogan told Alvarez, who appeared in court last Wednesday, that he faces life in prison or the death penalty.
Sheriff’s deputies haven’t commented on what led to Alvarez’s arrest.
Alvarez is the brother-in-law of Whitley French, the couple’s 22-year-old daughter, who married John Alvarez in May.
Whitley French, who was 19 years old and at home at the time of her parent’s deaths, survived the homicides with minor injuries.
Her parents were shot multiple times.
