When Nancy B. Perkins was offered a job at the new Eden Boys and Girls Club, she followed her heart.``I had a few other options, but we really liked this area. I came here because of the kids. I love working with youth,' said Perkins.

A native of Conway, she holds a bachelor's degree in recreation administration and a bachelor's degree in speech communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Her duties include directing all girls' programs, various co-educational programs and special events at the Boys and Girls Club.

``I've started special programs for the girls, such as cooking and arts and crafts classes. We have begun a Junior Leader's program and a weekly girls' night out,' Perkins said.

Prior to coming to Eden, she directed two adult day care centers in Hickory and Conover for a year. She also served as girls' club director at a Boys and Girls Club unit in Raleigh and worked as a recreation specialist with the Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department in Winston-Salem.

Currently, 45 girls hold memberships at the Eden facility.

``And we're looking for plenty more,' said Perkins. ``Right now, we have a good core group of girls to start with.'
