Guilford College opened its basketball season at Methodist College on Monday night and came away with a road victory.
The Quakers got double-figure performances from three of their 10 freshmen and held on to defeat the Monarchs 78-75.Newcomers Paul Ferrell, Chad Brown, and Kevin Emanuel made impressive debuts for Guilford. Ferrell had a game-high 25 points while Brown keyed a rally early in the second half that extended the Quakers three-point halftime lead to 10 points, 48-38.
Ferrell scored the first six points of the final half and finished with 17 points. Emanuel shut down Methodist standout Eric Hunt in the second half after the Monarch guard tallied 14 points in the first half. He also scored 10 points of his own.
``I was pleased with the play of everyone including our newcomers,' Guilford coach Jack Jensen. ``Any win on the road is tough, especially when you have a young team.'
The loss lowered Methodist's record to 2-1.
