Florida A&M's Tony Ezell broke two single-season passing records and had 323 yards in the air to lead the Rattlers to a 39-20 win over Howard University Saturday night.
The win assures the Rattlers, now 6-4 overall and 5-0 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, at least a share of the conference crown. The Bison fell to 6-4 and 2-3.Florida A&M senior place kicker Jimmy Vertuno, hobbled for the last three weeks by a groin pull, missed three extra points but connected on three more to break the school record with 107 career extra points. Maurice Freeman had kicked 105 from 1983-86.
Ezell completed 16 of 28 passes, including three for touchdowns. His 18 touchdown passes this year surpasses James Tullis' 15 in 1963, and his 132 completions broke the record of 128 held by Steve Scruggs since 1970.
Florida A&M took a 13-3 lead late in the first quarter and led 26-3 at halftime before Howard struggled to close the gap late in the game against Florida A&M's reserves.
