K&W Cafe, 6300 Amp Drive just off Lewisville-Clemmons Road in Clemmons, permanently closed on July 19.
A sign on the door announced the closure, referring customers to one of the three K&W Cafeterias in Winston-Salem.
The building’s permanent sign already had been removed as of July 24, and a cleaning crew was busy cleaning and removing equipment.
“Recently, we have launched online ordering across our footprint, delivery will launch in the majority of our restaurants in August, and we continue to grow our catering and food service divisions,” the company said in a statement. “We have also recently learned from recent consumer research and demographic data that the trade area of the Clemmons location has significant overlap with three other local cafeterias — especially when taking online ordering and delivery into consideration. For these reasons, we expect the closing to have an overall positive impact on the performance of the company and the local Winston-Salem cafeterias.”
The statement said that Clemmons employees were offered the opportunity to work at one of the other K&W locations.
Dax Allred, K&W’s president, said in the statement, “Today’s closing is bittersweet. We never want to close a cafeteria, but we know with several other cafeterias in close proximity, our team members and guests of Clemmons Cafe will be able to remain in the K&W family. We look forward to providing our loyal guests with the same K&W experience they know and love at our three local cafeterias in Winston.”
