HIGH POINT — Aetna is expanding its operations facility here, a move expected to bring 300 new jobs by the end of 2020.
It marks the second expansion at the health care company's High Point location in the past year. Aetna late last year added 80 full-time equivalent jobs.
Gov. Roy Cooper, in announcing the expansion at an event Thursday, characterized the jobs as "good paying" and "above the median average."
A representative from Aetna said she did not have specific salary figures, however, she did say Aetna is "meeting the median wage for High Point." According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for the Greensboro-High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area in 2017, the most recent year listed, was $43,310.
The new space will be used for clinical care management and customer service positions. The company is investing about $2.5 million in building upgrades and equipment.
Aetna, which is a part of CVS Health, will not receive any local or state economic incentives for the latest expansion, according to Loren Hill, president of the High Point Economic Development Corp.
"They chose us because they know us," Cooper said at Thursday's announcement at the High Point Municipal Building. "They know what kind of workforce we can give them to thrive."
Cooper cited the North Carolina education system, including K-12, community colleges and universities, as conduits for a smart workforce that draws companies to the state. He added that "we must recommit ourselves to education in North Carolina, making sure that we invest in education from cradle to career."
Louis Finkel, vice president of government affairs with CVS Health, said Aetna employs 9,000 people in North Carolina and contributes $90 million in state and local taxes.
"The purpose of our new enterprise is very clear," Finkel said when speaking about the recent CVS Health/Aetna merger. "We want to put people on a path to better health with the goal of transforming the consumer health care experience."
Jim Bostian, Aetna's market president for North Carolina, said the company's expansion is due in part to growth in commercial and Medicare Advantage business segments.
Aetna has 1,230 employees at its High Point facility at 4050 Piedmont Parkway. The company plans to expand the 126,000-square-foot space that it leases by adding 16,000 square feet, the High Point Economic Development Corp. said in a news release.
