For North Carolina ski resorts, it's all downhill from here -- weather permitting.
"This is ideal weather for snowmaking," said Brad Moretz, assistant general manager at Appalachian Ski Mountain. "We couldn't ask for anything better."
But things didn't start out that way.
North Carolina's ski resorts got off to one of their slowest starts in more than two decades. Appalachian didn't open until Dec. 18, its latest date in 23 years.
But thanks to some cold weather and a few inches of snow over the New Year's weekend, the state's ski picture has changed.
Now resort operators and shop owners are hoping the cold, snowy weather will continue so that they can make up for revenues lost during an unusually mild December.
