Investigators here are looking for two men they say were involved in Monday night's murder of a Kernersville woman in her home.
Police Chief Neal Stockton said Wednesday that the men - one white, one black and both in their mid-30s - were seen Monday outside the apartment of Kathi Goff Kennedy, 35, between 9 and 9:30 p.m.Stockton said a neighbor heard ``a short, startled scream,' and looked out a window into the parking lot of the apartment complex.
The neighbor saw the men and said they are not residents of the 346-unit complex, which is home to about 700 people.
Kennedy's mother found her daughter dead Tuesday morning in the apartment at 440-A Springbrook Drive. Kennedy's children, girls ages 2 and 4, were found unharmed in the home. The girls were home when the murder occurred, Stockton said. David Kennedy, Kathi's husband, was away from home on a fishing trip to the Outer Banks.
Kernersville police and lawmen from the State Bureau of Investigation and Forsyth County Sheriff's Department interviewed more than 200 people Tuesday and Wednesday, Stockton said. He said he is optimistic about the case although it's not a ``real hot trail.'
``There's a lot of interest in this case,' Stockton said. ``We feel somebody out there knows something.'
Police found a steak knife in the apartment that was used in the killing. Police say Kennedy scuffled with her attacker, but nothing is missing from the apartment and no sign of forced entry was evident.
``Everything leads me to believe she knew the person or felt comfortable letting them in her house,' he said.
